often come in twos and are knotted together in the middle to secure them together. In many instances stoles, sashes or even medallions may be awarded to graduates in place of graduation cords. These cords are worn during graduation ceremonies along with the gown, cap and hood.
The cords are different from the hood and the stoles in that more than one cord can be worn at one time, depending on ones achievements. Acknowledgement of a persons achievements plays an important role in students graduation ceremonies and also when participating as a member of an honors society, sorority, fraternity or for departmental recognition, the cords serve to grant sufficient recognition. University graduation cords are usually made with rayon which is twined around a cotton core. They usually measure approximately five feet in length without the tassels at the end which are measure 4 inches each.
