Why to Go and See Stomp the Music

Filed under: Music Resources, Recreation Info — @ 7:34 pm

The expression stomp originally began with two buskers entertaining the streets of Brighton, UK with music, their catchy performance hooking in bystaders to stop, view, and listen. Created by Steven McNichols and Luke Cresswell in Brighton, UK, the music STOMP debuted in the Orpheum Theatre in February 1994. The music STOMP can also track several of its roots to Booth Theatres erected at the Village Fairs within the Middle Ages and Renaissance period- an old custom in that period. Unlike any other music, STOMP pushes the concept of what constitutes audio. Eight nightly performers play simple and complex rhythms from every day items, such as six foot poles, sand, brooms, lids, litres of water, and aluminum bins. Through dance and audio, the group collaborates with every other to play audio, as well as giving person self-expression. STOMP is a sensual combination of comedy, percussion, and dynamic movements. The musical STOMP is the unique construction of Steven McNichols and Luke Cresswell that captalizes on a ‘less is more’ philosophy. It is a passionate production, not easily classified into a specific musical or theatrical genre. Via the lack of melodies, the audience listens to audio obtaining broken down into basics as eight chiseled and dynamic performers pound out rhythms with regular objects: poles, drumsticks, match boxes, water, brooms, bins, and lids. Ironically, the ordinary high quality of these objects catapults STOMP to an artistic level unmatched by some other modern theatrical acts. The simplicity in which the cast manipulates their ‘instruments’ and body expands the imagination into a fantastic reality. It’s set design is flashy and colorful at times; a more elaborate metal construction demonstrates instruments that are struck by performers harnessed from the ceiling. This restriction frees the cast to use their feet, legs, and arms to produce loud group rhythms that shake the rafters and audience with the intense, tribal rhythms. These in-your-face cadences are a potent avenue for individual and collective expression, leaving many on the edge of their seats. STOMP’s shortage of fancy performer clothing keeps the focus on what truly counts: dance moves and musical rhythms, which turn out to be more complex with every subsequent scene. Subtlety is also used to balance out these raw rhythms. One scene is focused around performers tapping six foot poles, as they stealthily circle the stage, nearly preying on one another with their moves and rhythms. Their sense of connection is palpable and sensual, cast eye contact igniting the expectation, as you nearly find yourself questioning who is going to ‘win’ at this musical game. Yet, everybody wins, the audience even invited into the performance via a cast member who initiates a clap-and-response session. Roughly two hours in duration, STOMP keeps one’s attention, making you wonder how items generally reserved for math difficulties, cleaning, and construction projects can entertain and create a powerful musical group dynamic. In this age of modern technology, STOMP is a refreshing blend of primal instincts meeting musical genious, reminding us of the musical and rhythmic potential correct under our noses. Singing Nuns Belt out Tunes on U2 Lady Gaga and Eminem Label

Filed under: Music Resources — @ 4:02 am
Stories comes today that London-based Decca Records has confirmed a singing group of Benedictine Nuns to record on the same label as U2, Lady Gaga and Eminem.
Also a part of Universal Music (of which includes Decca) are The Rolling Stones and Amy Winehouse.
Maybe hoping to realize a profit on a song like was done in 1963 when Dominique — sung in French by the first Singing Nun, Sister Luc Gabriel from Belgium — became a global hit, and was hummed by fans of every age, Decca has found their most recent group near Avignon in the South of France. These nuns, of the Abbaye de Notre Lady de l’Annonciation — an order who lives life thru closed doors — practice Gregorian chant all the way back to the 6th century.
However contemporaries may see their music to be similar to the way of Enignma, a 1990s chart topper. According to The Telegram, more than seventy priories in the USA, Africa and Europe were visited to find these gifts. One thing’s for sure, irrespective of what occurs after their album drops in Nov : As these presented Singing Nuns join U2, Lady Gaga, and Eminem on their label, the tuneful French Sisters will certainly stand out as an act not to be followed regardless of how many albums this spiritual group sells on Decca.
